Over the waters southeast of Madagascar in the tropical southern Indian Ocean, this location experiences high humidity and moderate winds under stable atmospheric pressure. The warm temperatures with significant anomaly from the zonal mean, combined with 88% humidity but no active precipitation, create conditions ripe for Frankenthaler's characteristic color field approach. The moderate northwesterly winds and pressure gradient inspire flowing, tilted washes of warm color that soak across the canvas, while the high humidity translates to multiple layers of translucent color pools that overlap and bleed into one another with soft, organic edges.
