Creative Rationale
Over the remote waters of the South Atlantic, far southeast of Argentina near the edge of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, an unusual atmospheric disturbance creates a profound meditation on temperature and pressure. The dramatically cold conditions, nearly 17 degrees below the regional norm, evoke Rothko's most contemplative period with deep indigo and black fields that seem to absorb light rather than emit it. The low sea-level pressure manifests as two dominant color bands that press heavily against each other, while the moderate wind creates subtle vibrations along their boundaries, and the high humidity gives these dark colors an unexpected luminous quality, as if moonlight were filtering through storm clouds.
