Creative Rationale
Over the high Andes of Peru near the border with Bolivia, where the thin mountain air creates extreme atmospheric conditions, the exceptionally low pressure and cold temperatures speak to the harsh beauty of high altitude. The cold 2.8 K temperature calls for Rothko's contemplative palette of deep blues and dark earth tones, while the low pressure creates just two massive color fields that dominate the canvas like the overwhelming presence of mountain peaks. The high humidity of 81% makes these colors glow with an inner luminosity, like the way thin air seems to intensify light at altitude, and the gentle wind softens the boundaries between the color fields into breathing, meditative transitions.
