Creative Rationale
Over the Southern Ocean at 45 degrees south latitude on the Prime Meridian, this location sits in the vast expanse of cold Antarctic waters where few ships venture. The extremely low temperature of 10.4 Kelvin creates a profoundly cold, almost otherworldly atmosphere, while the very high humidity and moderate wind from the northwest generate a sense of saturated, glowing mystery. I've interpreted this harsh yet luminous environment through Rothko's contemplative palette of deep ultramarines and blacks, with three bands created by the moderate-to-high pressure, their edges softly vibrating from the wind's influence, and an inner luminosity emerging from the near-complete humidity saturation.
