Creative Rationale
Over the Southern Ocean near the Antarctic Peninsula, where frigid air masses collide with warmer currents, this extreme temperature anomaly of 25.4 K above normal creates a tortured landscape of conflicting forces. The moderate westerly winds and high humidity drive biomorphic forms that bleed and dissolve into one another, while the low pressure creates a claustrophobic compression of organic shapes pressing against the picture plane. Light precipitation adds translucent washes that fragment and obscure the underlying structure, creating Gorky's characteristic tension between emergence and dissolution.
