Creative Rationale
Over the Arctic Ocean at 60°N on the Prime Meridian, where the Greenland Sea meets the edge of the polar ice cap, extreme atmospheric conditions create a scene of violent energy. The brutally cold temperature of 11.8 Kelvin (-261°C) and high pressure system generate aggressive slashing marks in icy greys and blacks, while the strong 10.5 m/s wind from the southwest drives diagonal cuts across the canvas with the force of de Kooning's most violent brushstrokes. The high humidity manifests as thick, viscous paint passages that seem to congeal and drag across the surface, creating the raw physical presence of paint as subject matter.
