Creative Rationale
Over the high Andes of southern Peru and Bolivia, where extreme altitude creates an otherworldly atmospheric environment, the remarkably low pressure and cold temperature combine to evoke Rothko's most contemplative, spiritual period. The frigid conditions at -0.3 K demand deep, meditative blues and blacks that seem to absorb light rather than reflect it, while the extremely low pressure of 635.7 Pa calls for just two massive color fields that dominate the canvas with weighty presence. The gentle 2.2 m/s wind creates subtle, breathing edges between the bands, and the 70% humidity adds an inner luminosity that makes these dark colors glow with mysterious depth.
