Creative Rationale
This location sits in the remote Southern Ocean, roughly 60 degrees south latitude at the prime meridian, in the harsh Antarctic waters between the South Atlantic and the approaches to the Weddell Sea. The extreme cold temperature with high anomaly, combined with very high wind speeds from the west-southwest and steep pressure gradients, creates conditions perfect for Riley's most intense optical compositions. I'm interpreting this as tightly packed horizontal undulating lines in pure black and white, with the 12.2 m/s winds creating rapid, nervous oscillations that seem to vibrate off the canvas, while the steep pressure gradient compresses the lines into dense, almost overwhelming patterns that capture the harsh, unforgiving nature of these Antarctic waters.
