Creative Rationale

Over the vast steppes of Central Asia, near the intersection of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and western China, an extreme arctic air mass has descended upon the high plateau. The temperature of 32.7 Kelvin (-240°C) represents an impossibly cold atmospheric condition that drives this composition toward Rothko's darkest, most contemplative palette of deep ultramarines and blacks. The low pressure creates two dominant horizontal bands that fill the canvas heavily, while the moderate wind from the northwest softens their boundaries into breathing, organic edges, and the dry 14% humidity keeps the luminosity subdued yet mysteriously glowing from within.
