Creative Rationale

Over the Arctic Ocean north of western Russia, extreme cold and moderate winds create a harsh yet luminous atmosphere. The exceptionally low temperature of 16.6 K drives my palette toward muted earth tones punctuated by icy crystalline accents, while the moderate wind speed of 5.6 m/s from the southwest creates controlled bursts of color that pool at the canvas edges. The low pressure system manifests as dense accumulations of saturated color bleeding inward from the perimeter, leaving Francis's signature luminous negative space breathing in the center.
