Creative Rationale

Over the Arctic Ocean northeast of Baffin Island, where frigid waters meet the persistent ice edge, a moderate wind pushes across relatively low pressure systems. The 10.3 m/s wind from the northeast creates dense, swarming processions of calligraphic marks that flow diagonally across the canvas, while the high humidity of 85% veils these marks in atmospheric layers of smoky blues and grays. The extreme cold and the low pressure coalesce the gestural notations into crowded, jazz-inflected rhythms against a deep blue-black ground, punctuated by stark white and pale cerulean marks that drift like arctic breath made visible.
