Creative Rationale
Above the frozen Arctic Ocean northwest of the Canadian mainland, where extreme cold meets the perpetual dance of polar winds, this composition emerges from the harshest atmospheric conditions. The extraordinarily low temperature of 8.7 Kelvin translates into a palette dominated by steely blues and crystalline whites, while the moderate westerly wind creates diagonal gestural energy sweeping across the canvas. The low humidity and absence of precipitation allow for more open breathing spaces between color clusters, with the relatively low pressure creating areas of deeper, more saturated ground that pulse beneath Mitchell's characteristic loaded brushwork.
