Creative Rationale
Over the Southern Ocean at 60 degrees south latitude, directly south of the Atlantic-Indian Ocean boundary, fierce winds cut through an atmosphere of extreme cold and high humidity. The very low pressure system of 976.3 Pa creates a turbulent, storm-laden environment where dense moisture hangs in the frigid air but produces no precipitation. I interpret this harsh Antarctic maritime setting through Mitchell's gestural language, using steely blues and winter greys to capture the bitter cold, with dense overlapping brushstrokes reflecting the high humidity, and strong diagonal movements expressing the 11.9 m/s winds sweeping across this desolate seascape.
