Creative Rationale

Over the high Tibetan Plateau in Central Asia, at 45°N 90°E, an extraordinary atmospheric condition unfolds with extremely low pressure and bitter cold temperatures of -249°C creating a stark, crystalline environment. The moderate winds and low humidity translate into Mitchell's visual language as sparse but energetic gestural clusters of steely blues and winter whites against a luminous ground, with occasional warm memory-passages breaking through the cold palette. The dry conditions create breathing room between paint clusters, while the wind's directional force elongates marks into diagonal sweeps across the vast landscape format.
